FREE MUSEUM DAY: Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art

In the spirit of the Smithsonian Museums, which offer free admission every day, Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket… for free. Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art, founded in 1998, houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of Asian art in the southern region of the United States. Asia is represented by outstanding works of art that are characteristic of an ancient culture with rich artistic traditions. The collection of more than 1200 objects, which range in date from 202 BC to the early twentieth century, includes intricately carved jades and ivories, paintings, ceramics, textiles, and funerary art. In addition to the Asian collection, the collection of Judaic art reflects the artistic journey of some of Israel’s most celebrated contemporary artists including Daniel Kafri, Nicki Imber, and Ofra Friedland. The most recent gallery is the Holocaust Memorial Gallery opened in the spring of 2014. The gallery focuses on the struggles and triumphs of survivors, refugees, and liberators of the Holocaust of World War II; Displays in the gallery include Jewish ghetto currency, photographs of Jews in concentration camps, sculptures and artwork, World War II information panels and timeline, and other personal memorabilia on loan to the museum.
